Coolangatta

Although it is at the southern end of the Gold Coast, Coolangatta is one of the most sought after tourist centers in the region. Coolangatta and Tweed Heads are really the one city. The big difference is that Coolangatta is in Queensland and Tweed Heads is over the border in New South Wales. Coolangatta is one of the oldest holiday regions in Queensland. It was popular as a tourist destination before the term “Gold Coast” was coined. Photos in local pubs show swimmers in neck to knee bathing suits frolicking on the beach and this is long before the first Gold Coast high rise resort was ever though of. The beach at Coolangatta is sensational and some of the local surfing hotspots are icons in the sport. Snapper Rocks, Point Danger and Kirra Beach are all among the favorite Gold Coast surfing destinations.

The Wintersun festival occurs in Coolangatta in June and July of each year. This is one of Australia’s most popular festivals and baby boomers from around the country come here to listen to rock and roll music from their era and tell lies to each other about the past. If you want to come here at this time and you havn’t booked, you better bring a tent, because all the Gold Coast accommodation in town will be booked out a year in advance.

Coolangatta Beach

Coolangatta is the gateway to the Gold Coast hinterland and this region is one of the most beautiful mountain and forest regions in Australia. Native vegetation and wildlife coupled with rocky cliffs and waterfalls as well as sensational views over the coastline provide a tourist destination unlike any other. It is a fantastic place for a day away for a picnic or to come and stay for a while in one of the rainforest resorts.

Coolangatta lies on the northern side of the Tweed River which provides an aquatic playground for visitors to the area. It is a popular fishing destination as well as providing access to the open ocean for fishing charters, whale watching trips and diving expeditions to nearby Cook Island. Coolangatta and Tweed Heads are also popular as a golfing destination and many golfers happily spend their holidays here as there are a number of local courses that welcome visitors.
