Burleigh Heads is different from the other Gold Coast holiday destinations. It is well away from the main tourist regions around Surfers Paradise to its north and Coolangatta to the south. It tends to attract families with kids rather than international tourists and for this reason the infrastructure here is more family orientated. While it does have one of the best surfing beaches on the Gold Coast, there are fewer people on the beach and the holiday atmosphere is less hectic. The beachfront is complimented by a long park strip that runs right along the beachfront providing a fantastic relaxation area for holiday makers. Burleigh Heads does have plenty of the apartment style resorts that are common throughout Gold Coast accommodation and they are concentrated along the beachfront, but there are many other options as well.
The headland itself is a great place for surfers as it makes a great break where the swells come around the point. It is also a great place for a bushwalk and the area is zoned as a National Park. On its southern side is the Tallebudgera Creek, and this beautiful estuary is great for calm water swimming, canoeing, kayaking and the like. There are always lots of families with kids playing in the calm waters here.
The main shopping center at Burleigh Heads is right at the beach. You just walk across the Gold Coast highway and you are in the middle of a great commercial area with lots of take away’s, cafes and restaurants as well as general shopping and fashion boutiques.
